The Story of Our Shield

The school shield is
triangular in shape because we think of our school as composed of three sections.
These sections are further symbolized in the three links of chain which are intertwined on
the green background. Each link bears a symbol for each separate section. The
Cross is the choice of the Sacred Heart Section. The old Greek letter, alpha, represents
the Amalgamated section, while the Lamp in the link which is common to both sections,
representing learning. In the gold border we have the name of the school and the
school motto..."NOSCE TE IPSUM" .... "KNOW THYSELF"

Our school is located in Wabush, Labrador. We are situated above the 50th
Parrallel in Labrador, the mainland portion of the province of Newfoundland andLabrador, Canada, which
borders the province of Quebec. The main source of employment are the two mining companies, The Iron Ore Company of Canada and Wabush Mines. J. R. Smallwood is a primary and elementary school with 430 students from kindergarten to grade six. Our staff of 32 are from the surrounding towns of Labrador City and Wabush
